The Dojo Loach (also known as the Weather Loach or Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) is a fascinating and hardy bottom-dweller known for its eel-like body, peaceful nature, and quirky behaviour. Native to East Asia, this loach is especially popular for its sensitivity to barometric pressure changes, often becoming more active before storms, hence the nickname “weather loach.” Its long, slender body comes in various colour morphs, including golden and greyish-brown with a marbled pattern. Curious and social, the Dojo Loach is best kept in groups and will often interact playfully with tank mates and even its human keepers.
Maximum adult size: 20–30 cm
Temperament: Peaceful, social, and active, especially in groups
Difficulty of care: Easy to moderate (requires space and soft substrate)
Preferred Temperature: 16–24°C (can tolerate cooler conditions)
Preferred pH of water: 6.5–8.0
Type of breeding: Egg-layer (rarely breeds in home aquariums)
Dojo Loaches thrive in spacious aquariums with soft, sandy substrate to prevent damage to their sensitive barbels. They enjoy burrowing and hiding, so provide plenty of caves, plants, and smooth decorations. They accept a wide range of foods, from sinking pellets to live and frozen foods like bloodworms. While peaceful, their size and activity level mean they’re best suited to medium to large community tanks with similarly non-aggressive tank mates.
