The Black Neon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) is a sleek, elegant schooling fish known for its striking horizontal black and white stripes that shimmer against a translucent body. Often mistaken for its more colourful cousin, the Neon Tetra, this species brings a subtler but equally beautiful contrast to planted aquariums. Hardy, peaceful, and undemanding, Black Neon Tetras are ideal for community tanks and make an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
Maximum adult size: 4 cm
Temperament: Peaceful and shoaling; best kept in groups of 6 or more
Difficulty of care: Easy
Preferred Temperature: 22–27°C
Preferred pH of water: 5.5–7.5
Type of breeding: Egg-scatterer
Black Neon Tetras thrive in well-planted tanks with soft, slightly acidic water and subdued lighting, which enhances their subtle iridescence. Their peaceful nature makes them perfect companions for other small, non-aggressive species. They should be fed a varied diet including quality flake food, micro pellets, and occasional live or frozen offerings like brine shrimp or daphnia. When breeding, provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and slightly lower the pH to encourage spawning behaviour.
