The Albino Halfbeak (Dermogenys pusilla var. albino) is a fascinating surface-dwelling fish, known for its unique mouth structure where the lower jaw is significantly elongated, giving it the characteristic “halfbeak” look. This albino variant features a pale cream-to-pinkish body with red eyes, offering a subtle yet intriguing presence in the aquarium. Native to Southeast Asia, Halfbeaks are livebearers with delicate temperaments and a preference for calm, well-maintained environments.
Maximum adult size: 7–8 cm
Temperament: Peaceful to mildly territorial; best kept in small groups or species tanks
Difficulty of care: Moderate (requires stable water and gentle tankmates)
Preferred Temperature: 24–28°C
Preferred pH of water: 6.8–7.5
Type of breeding: Livebearer
Albino Halfbeaks occupy the upper level of the tank and prefer a setup with floating plants, subdued lighting, and minimal surface agitation. Though generally peaceful, males may show mild aggression towards each other, so either keep one male with several females or maintain a small group in a well-sized tank. They feed at the surface and enjoy a diet of floating foods, including micro pellets, crushed flakes, and small live or frozen prey like mosquito larvae. Due to their delicate nature, they should not be kept with boisterous or fin-nipping species. Breeding occurs readily in good conditions, with females giving birth to live young after a short gestation.
